With the big blow out going on at Sunrise Records, I've picked up some interesting items. Remember The Midnight Special? I found three "Best of" dvd's: 1973, 1974 & 1977. There are some great performances - back when everybody sang LIVE. Other things have changed too. The guitar of choice in the 70's was the Les Paul. Strats were rare. But something terrible becomes immediately clear: the horrific fashion. Everybody dressed like pimps! Even Neil Sedaka - that icon of 60's pop was decked out in a white, 3-piece suit with a vast crimson fedora. (His song "Laughter In The Rain" has never been so apt.) As a bass player it hurt me to see so many bassists wearing scarves and knotted "blouses". I remember it was bad, but my memory had glazed over the sheer depth of 70's style. So, the next time you see an 80's video and wonder "What were they thinking?", check out the Midnight Special. And keep on truckin'.
