Winterizing 2 Point-Oh Date: 2008-10-24

The next phase of home renovations will begin shortly. It’s going to be a two-stage effort so I cashed in an old insurance policy to get this project started. I hope to be done this part by Christmas. Anyway, the e-test revealed I’m losing a lot of heat around the doors, windows and worst of all, in the basement at the “end caps”. (End caps are those dark, cobwebby spaces up in between the floor joists where they meet the basement walls. The things you learn!) Right off the bat, I need to replace both doors and frames. That’s urgent. The windows can wait until after my lottery win. Next, I’ll need to have the house completely insulated. That’s going to be a real pain. Spray foam insulation only takes a short time to apply, but the prep and repair will be significant. They need access to every end cap – and in my case, half of them are enclosed behind finished ceilings. So, I’ll have to tear down the old ceilings, the spray foam will go on, and then because of the fumes the foam gives off, I’ll have to install new drywall over everywhere that’s been sprayed. That’s going to be a challenge – especially since I have to relocate the rabbits for at least 24 hours while the gases clear. It’s their room that will be most affected. That’s the same room where the previous owners ran an unlicensed accu-puncture clinic. Like I said, the things you learn…
