A U.S. military panel in Guantanamo Bay says Canadian-born Omar Khadr should serve 40 years in prison for war crimes. It's merely a symbolic decision because a pre-trial plea deal caps his sentence at eight years. Khadr pleaded guilty to five war crimes, including killing Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer in Afghanistan in July 2002. At the time, Khadr was 15 years old. Toronto-born Khadr, now 24, will have to serve one year in U.S. custody before he is eligible to apply for transfer to Canada.
Now, hold on just one, cotton-picken minute... Khadr's a convicted terrorist. He's a murderer. He has even admitted that at his darkest hours in prison, he would turn to his "happy place" for comfort (the memories of his crimes). Personally, I don't care where he was born. I don't care that he was 15 at the time of his crimes. He's a convicted and unrepentent terrorist. Omar Khadr has NO place in Canada. Ever.
