The world awoke to the news that the great Titanic had hit an iceberg and sunk - taking with it over 1,500 people. It was one of those quaking moments that shakes the very foundation of all we know. It was 1912's "9/11". The only difference is, the villain in the Titanic disaster wasn't a terrorist. He didn't sneak in from a foreign country. In fact, he was the most respected ship's captain on the high seas. The architech of the Titanic disaster was Captain Smith himself. He was too old and far too complacent. Smith steamed the Titanic into a well-documented ice field at full speed. A recent re-enactment in a shipping simulator showed that had Captain Smith simply slowed the ship to 10 knots, less than half its collision speed, there would have been ample time to avoid the iceberg. Sure, the rivets and hull steel had their share of issues but it all boils down to the iceberg. Had Smith not hit it, 2,206 would have disembarked happily in New York. Instead, only 705 frozen and shattered survivors completed the journey and the unsinkable Titanic...became a legend.
