Critical Listening
Date:
2011-12-23
I'm always telling my students to be "critical" listeners. In essence, it means to always be air-checking. Radio, TV, even in conversation, listen - and if necessary for a fuller understanding, question what you hear. Don't simply adopt sayings unless you know their origins and understand their true meaning. And above all, don't perpetuate mis-sayings. A perfect example is: "Happy Holidays". This is a ridiculous saying. Just how many "holidays" are being covered? It's the "holiday season" or the "Christmas break". To wish someone "happy holidays" is a vague term at best. So, always say what you mean and mean what you day.
Merry Christmas.
