There hasn't been a property for sale in this neighbourhood for years. Suddenly, just before I list my house, a big "for sale" sign went up directly across the street. This was on Thursday, with open-houses scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. To be honest, the exterior of my house was bad. I'd been completely focused on getting the insides all prettied up. But with all the street traffic an open house generates, I had to act fast and make my place stand out for all these potential home-buyers.

First, I gathered every power tool in the garage and one by one, I used them all. The hedge and cedar bushes got a trim. The lawn got cut. The house, windows, awnings and shutters got a good power wash. And, the whipper snippered until it could snipper no more.

Then, it was a trip to Home Depot for an assortment of annuals to give the place some instant colour. Black mulch and a hearty watering finished it all off. Then, some deft cement trowling was needed to give the front steps a fresh, non-crumbling look. I even squeezed in time to paint the rabbit room "celery".

After two days of back-threatening work, and as cars started to hover in front of Saturday's open house, I went inside knowing that outside at least, my house has never looked better. Inside...well, that's another story...
